1985 TOYOTA 4RUNNER REAR AXLE UPGRADE

  Project axle upgrade. The rear axle on this 1985 Toyota 4runner is off a newer V6 model which is 3" wider and thicker then the stock 85 axle that was under there before. This axle housing in the picture has been heavily modified to accommodate the style of off roading that this truck was meant for (ROCK CRAWLING). The housing had to be prepped to fit the Toyota TRD e-locker setup. To do this we needed a fancy jig that we built (for the new stud holes for the e- locker) , a torch, welder, grinder, air hammer and some brain power. Then after all that was said and done it was time to build that housing to take on the rocks. Armor from Blue Torch Fab was welded into place in order to protect that differential from the trail abuse.  A fancy, but functional Ballistics Fab filler/inspection cap was installed for the ease of inspecting the gears and filling differential with gear oil. 

    Once the axle housing was all welded, painted and new seals where installed it was time to drop in the new Nitro 5:29 gears that just came back from Bobby Longs. The gears where at Bobby Longs getting CRYO* treated (BEEFY/STRONG). After the axle was done and ready we started the suspension calibration. This is the fun part because there is math incorporated in order to get the correct measurements of the full droop and the full up travel of the leafs. The leaf springs where disassembled so that there was very little resistance in order to allow for the trial of our calculations. This is very important because if you don't get it right the 35"- 37" tires that will be mounted will end up crushing the fender wells during the up travel of the suspension. NOT GOOD FOR THE BODY! Once we figured out the exact location of the axle and springs it was time to fab up our new leaf spring hangers. These are supper beefy and keep the springs safe from any rock bashing that may happen out on the trail. Up next is the front axle!! Stay tuned for more awesomeness!

WTF HAS BEEN GOING ON WITH DC?

  Sorry to everyone for taking so long to get back on here to update the posts. So what the f@$k has been going on at the DC man cave? Well lets just get started with the new tool that I picked up over at Home Depot. I picked up a new RIGID heavy duty abrasive chop saw. It was not a bad deal for under $200 and a lifetime warranty. Hahah we will be putting that lifetime warranty to the test!

  So far this thing slays the metal tubing that I have been cutting for DARTH BENDER. Yes I'm beefing up my tube bender and making it more mobile around the shop. The DARTH part of the name has been dubbed the indicator that I have built some thing that is over kill. BEEEEFFFFYYYYY or as my boy Nick Helton likes to say "Built to the Hilt." Anyhow back to the chop saw review. It is very accurate for an abrasive chop saw as long as you are using good discs. A little on the heavy side, but this has been a good quality so far since it keeps the saw from wanting to move around while cutting. The heavy duty base plate is perfect for any additional clamps that you may want to use in order to hold the material in place. I'm not a huge fan of the orange, but I can look past it since it cuts so well.

  Shop accident acquired last week. Not my favorite part of the week by any means. I was using the cut off disc to cut some pieces for the motorcycle parts lamps that I have been building and low and be hold the disc blew up, but it didn't just break it caused the grinder to rip out of my hands. The trigger got stuck causing it to go ape shit all over the place, but first it decided to walk up my hand and across my chest. Damn that did hurt!!!  Blood was spraying from my cut all over the place. I was lucky that I was wearing two shirts one of which was thick flannel. If I had not been wearing those two shirts I would have been bleeding from my chest instead of just getting burned.  Bottom line is you can never be to safe in the shop while using these power tools.

  Kevin stopped in the other week as well. Kevin had a problem with his propane injection Crown Vic. The mixer was originally mounted to the plastic fender well of the car. Over time that mixer just cracked all the plastic causing it to sag really bad in the engine compartment. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS!!!! Propane is very flammable so you don't want the hoses moving around near that hot engine. HEAT+FUEL=FIRE BALL EXPLOSION! So Kevin came to me in hopes that I could help him out and get him safely back on the road. This is the new mount that I fabricated to hold the mixer firmly in place now.
